Simply Wicked

“Wicked” is a musical based show based on the novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. It has been played in Broadway, West End, and many other theaters. It is based on L. Frank Baum’s the Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The musical debuted on October 30, 2003 on Broadway. Since then, the story has received several Tony Awards (Best Book, Best Musical, Best Orchestration, and Best Leading Actress) and six Drama Desk Awards.

The story happened prior to Dorothy’s arrival in Kansas and tells the story of the Wicked Witch of the West named Elphaba. The witches’ name was derived from L. Frank Baum’s initials. The story relates Elphaba’s relationship with the Good Witch of the North, Glinda. The plot also shows the whole story in the eyes of the villain- this is developed both in the novel and the musical.

The novel’s plot is too complicated for a musical so Stephen Schwartz collaborated with Winnie Holzman, an Emmy Award-winning writer, to condense the plot.

The musical is well-liked by audiences-“amazing”, the music is “fantastic”, in fact many of the productions are sold out, making the production among the highest-grossing shows in theaters and in tours.
