For you newcomers, "Les' Miserables" is a musical based on the novel by French poet and playwright, Victor Hugo.  It was first presented at a Paris sports arena in 1980, but closed after only three months.  In 1983, producer Cameron Mackintosh was asked to produce an English-language version of the show.  The opening night of "Les Miserables" at the Barbican  Theatre on 8 October 1985 was one of those extraordinary occasions when against all odds a theatrical alchemy took place that made everyone forget all the years of work and months of rehearsal - racing against the clock - that went into adapting Hugo's sweeping masterpiece for the musical stage.  After only a week of previews the show simply soared, and both the audience and the cast were elevated to a state of powerful emotion rarely seen in the theatre.

"Les Miserables" starts off in a prison in Toulon, France in 1815.  Jean Valjean is released on parole, but is socially condemned.  The Bishop of Digne offers him food and shelter.  He ends up stealing from the bishop and gets caught by the police.  The bishop lies to save him so he can begin a new life.  He assumes a new identity and becomes a wealthy owner and mayor of Montreuil-sur-Mer.  The musical continues to follow him through his life until his death.

The 25th Anniversary of "Les Miserables" was held on October 3, 2010 at the O2 in North Greenwich.  In 1985 and 2012 it won various Laurence Oliver Awards.  In 1987, it won many Tony Awards and Drama Desk Awards.  There are also many non-English language cast albums of the musical.

ELF--On Broadway

ELF  is a musical version of the popular film which returns to Broadway for the holiday season.  The story begins at Santa's North Pole workshop when one of the elves, Buddy, learns that he is not actually an elf; he's human. When Santa tells Buddy the whereabouts of his birth father, Buddy heads to New York City hoping to reconnect with his dad.  His father turns out to be a cranky workaholic who want nothing to do with Buddy or his Christmas-loving antics.  Buddy however developes a bond with his step-mother, half brother and a beautiful Macy's co-worker and helps restore the lost holiday spirit of his jaded New York family.

While a few changes have been made, ELF is very faithful to the popular 2003 film the show is based on.  Audiences will recognize many of the film's jokes with several new ones added.  The brassy score features Christmas carol-tinged songs and the story takes place on a brightly colored stage where Santa's workshop and the New York City skyline come to life.  There are many big dance numbers featuring the show's 25-member cast with humor prevalent throughout.

ELF is perfect for children.  Kids will love Buddy's smiley personality and be wowerd by the show's visual magic (including Santa's flying sleigh).   COME  AND  ENJOY ! !

"Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?"

"Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?" is set in the fictional college town of New Carthage, "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" begins as George and Martha, a middle-aged history professor and his wife, return home after a faculty get-together.  During the party, Martha's father, the president of the college, had introduced the couple to a new teacher and his wife, and unbeknownst to George, Martha has invited them over for drinks--tonight.  As George and Martha sling insults at each other, their wide-eyed guests, Nick and Honey, arrive.  At first the young couple is disconcerted by George and Martha's bickering, but as the liquor flows, Nick and Honey find themselves drawn into their hosts' tumultuous, damaged world.  What begins as a night of fun and games quickly becomes a boxing match as George and Martha battle their guests..and each other.

After acclaimed runs in Chicago and Washington D.C., the Steppenwolf Theatre Company production of  "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" invites audience members into the cluttered living room of George and Martha for a long night of drinking and debauchery.  As the evening unfolds, two couples' darkest secrets are revealed--but the drama isn't simply painful and heart-wrenching.  George and Martha's acerbic wit is, at times, wildly funny and poetic, while Honey earns laughs as she downs glass after glass of brandy.  Edward Albee's Pulitzer Prize-winning play is a modern classic, and this newly imagined production allows audiences to view the beloved drama with fresh eyes.

"Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" is an excellent choice for mature, older teens, especially if they have studied the play or seen the movie.

"FALLING"

The story of "Falling" is about Josh, a severly autistic 18-year-old with violent tendencies.  His parents, Tami and Bill, have worked hard to create a safe and happy life for Josh and his younger sister, Lisa.  But when Bill's mother elderly mother comes to visit, the family's carefully constructed routine is thrown into a tailspin.  Each character is compelled to examine what he or she needs and wants out of life, and how Josh's presence will affect their future.  "Falling" explores the joys and challenges of raising a child with disabilities.

"Falling" is a delicate one-act play that balances the real-life drama and subtle comedy of raising a disabled child.  Deanna Jent's play offers an honest and realistic look at a struggling but loving family.  There are moments of intense drama juxtaposed with scenes of fantasy.  The five-person cast is led by Broadway veterans Julia Murney and Daniel Everidge, who enact the play's mother/son relationship with great sensitivity.  The show is structured to make audiences laugh and cry.

"Falling" is appropriate for older children and adults with disabilities.  There is some alcohol use, adult language and brief, harrowing scenes of violence, but overall the play is both educational and honest in its depiction of a family dealing with severe autism.

"Stomp"

"Stomp" is a high-energy percussive symphony, coupled with dance, played entirely on unconventional instruments, such as garbage can lids, buckets, brooms and sticks.  It is movement mads original through the use of everyday objects in non-traditional ways.

"Stomp" is a joyful, witty and wordless show that has been seen all over the world.  An eight member cast with energy to burn creates beautiful music and sly humor with found objects:  Zippo lighters, push brooms, wooden poles, hammer handles, garbage cans, inner tubes, matchboxes-and yes, even the kitchen sink.  There's no traditional narrative; both household and industrial objects find new life as musical instruments in this unique combination of percussion, movement and visual comedy.  It is a fourney through sound, a celebration of the everyday and a comic interplay of characters wordlessly communicating through dance and drum.

"Stomp" is like a party hosted by eight different and compelling personalities ranging from intense and ferocious to deadpan and sarcastic.  There is some audience participation, though no one is singled out.  A few parts of the show get loud but the majority of it is comfortable for most audiences.  "Stomp" is good for kids, the humor and fun are accessible to all audiences, from kids to grandparents.

BRING IT ON: THE MUSICAL

The story of "Bring It On: The Musical" is set in the high stakes world of competitive high school cheerleading.  "Bring It On: The Musical" tells the story of Campbell, cheer captain and most popular girl at the uber-affluent Truman High school.  Before she can lead her award-winning squad to another win at Nationals, tragedy strikes:  School redistricting forces Campbell to transfer to the multi-ethnic Jackson High School.  Knocked off her throne as teen queen, Campbell tries to make sense of her new "outsider" status.  Soon she discoveres that Eva, a plotting sophmore with delusions of grandeur, is responsible for knocking her from the top of the cheer pyramid.  With a national title on the line, Campbell must convince Danielle, Jackson's "it-girl" and leader of hip-hop dance troupe The Crew, to start a cheerleading squad and help bring on some sweet revenge.

"Bring It On:  The Musical" elevates musicals to a whole new level, with the same skyscraping pyramids, high-octave basket tosses and mid-air arabesques you'd expect from real cheerleading competitions televised on ESPN.  Besides the jaw-dropping aerial stunts, "Bring It On" has the heart of a champion with an original story of Tony Award winner Jeff Whitty (Avenue Q), music and lyrics by Tony Award-winning composer Lin-Manuel Miranda (In the Heights), music by Pulitzer and Tony Awad-winning composer Tom Kitt (Next to Normal) and lyrics by Amanda Green (High Fidelity), plus a talented, energetic young cast.  All in all, Bring It On is a musical worth cheering for !

"Bring It On:  The Musical" is good for Kids.  You bet your pom-poms  it is !  Set in two competing high schools, Bring It On: The Musical is the kind of coming of age tale that appeals to tweens and teens alike.  Besides the human pyrotechnics in the musical's many cheerleading routines, Bring It On boasts diverse characters, youthful and witty diaogue and a overall theme that it's always ok to be yourself.  Jam-packed with teen spirit, Bring It On is a musical the whole family will flip for.

"AVENUE Q"

Tony winning musical "Avenue Q" is the hilarious and heartfelt story of a bright-eyed college grad who comes to New York with big dreams and little money.  He can only afford to live on Avenue-Q but--good news!--his neighbors turn out to be a remarkably funny bunch of characters.  "Avenue-Q" is a grown-up episode of "Sesame Street," with satirical songs ("It Sucks To Be Me") and jokes replacing preschool-style banter.  The actors remain visible at all times and mimic the action of their puppets, adding yet another level of humor.  "Avenue-Q" is fast-moving and laugh-packed, especially for audiences willing to embrace its rebellios, politically incorrect spirit.

Even though there are Henson-esque puppets "Avenue-Q" is not a children's musical.  Explicit language is used throughout "Avenue-Q," two of the puppet characters have sex onstage, one character wrestles with his sexuality and one dirty ditty declares, "The internet is for porn."  Older teenagers will enjoy the show because it tackles issues of growing up and leaving home, but parents should use discretion in deciding whether their kids are mature enough for "Avenue-Q."

JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR

"Jesus Christ Superstar" will be familiar to anyone with knowledge of western religion.  Borrowing from the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, the musical tells the story of the last seven days of Jesus Christ's life.  As the show opens, apostle, Judas Iscariot is Empire.  Indeed, priests Caiaphas, Annas and more gather and agree that Jesus and His movement must be crushed.  An exalted Jesus arrives in Jerusalem only to find the temple filled with unsavory merchants and money tenders.  Overrun by flood of people needing His help, He tells them to heal themselves, and his confidante Mary Magdalene has to calm Him down.  In "Jesus Christ Superstar," Judas, fearing the movement is getting out of Jesus' control, goes to the Romans and tells them Jesus will be in the Garden of Gethsemane the following night.  He receives 30 pieces of silver as payment.  At the Garden, Judas arrives with Roman soldiers and identifies Jesus by kissing Him on the cheek.  Jesus is arrested and sent to Caiaphas, then Pontius Pilate and finally King Herod, who condemns Him to death on the cross.

As one of the earliest rock operas, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's "Jesus Christ Superstar" is a completely sung-through piece and reflects a '70s musical sensibility.  Numbers runs the gamut from high-waiting rock anthems like Judas' "Heaven On Their Minds" to more folky-rock ballads like Mary's "I Don't Know How to Love Him."  The single, industrial-looking set features a scrolling LED banner that counts down the days for the audience, and gives the feeling of watching the events unfold through a CNN-like lens.  "Jesus Christ Superstar" was originally conceived to have many modern-day elements, so while Jesus wears the expected flowing white robes, costumes range from bondage-esque numbers in the Temple scene to Roman soldiers that have the look of heavily armored commandos.

MAMMA MIA !

"Mamma Mia !" is set in a beach resort in the Mediterranean, "Mamma Mia!" tells the story of Sophie, a bride to be with one wish:  to have her absent father walk her down the aisle.  After reading passages about three old lovers in her mom's diary, Sophie sends each a wedding invitation in hopes of learning which is her dad.  The arrival of the men from her past is surprising to Donna, Sophie's fiercely independent mother, who prides herself on getting through life without a man, and highly amused to Donna's two best gal pals.  The more Sophi and her mother struggle to find truth and understanding, the more it threatens to tear them apart and wreck Sophie's dream wedding.

THE BEST MAN

Set in 1960 at the National Convention in Philadelphia, "The Best Man" is the story of two presidential candidates hoping to earn their party'a nomination: Secretary William Rusell (John Larroquette) and Senator Joseph Cantwell (Eric McCormack).  When Cantwell threatens to smear Russell's reputation with a rumor about his mental health, Russell faces a tough decision.  Will he unleash an equally devastating smear on Cantwell to win the presidential ticket, or keep his moral integrity intact even if it means losing the race ?

"The Best Man" is a gripping and humorous behind-the-scenes look at the race for the presidency.  Director Michael Wilson includes the audience in the action, decorating the Schoenfield Theatre with brightly colored banners and campaign posters.  The lush, rotating set gives audience members a voyeuristic look into the hotel rooms of both presidential candidates, with a cast of theatrical heavy hitters (James Earl Jones, Angela Lansbury, Candice Bergen, Jefferson Mays, Kerry Butler, Michael McKean) paying visits to the candidates to deliver powerful performances.  Gore Vidal wrote this juicy drama more than 50 years ago, but it retains a ripped-from-the-headlines quality for an election year revival.

"The Best Man," is a play about power, ambition, political secrets, ruthlessness and the race for the presidency, Gore Vidal's "The Best Man"is set at the national convention where two candidates are vying for their party's nomination during the primary season.  It's an inside look at the dirt-digging, electioneering...and what could be more fun in a Presidential campaign season than these theatrical fireworks.

"GHOST"

The new musical show "Ghost," tells the story where banker Sam Wheat and artist Molly Jensen are young New Yorkers who are very much in love.  While walking home to their apartment one night the couple gets mugged, and Sam is shot and killed.  Trapped in this world as a ghost, Sam learns the truth behind his murder, and that Molly is in grave danger.  As he follows the man who killed him to try and find out more, Sam stumbles on eccentric storefront psychic Oda Mae Brown.  Though she's been a fraud of medium for years, it turns out she really can hear Sam.  She's reluctant to get involved, but Sam convinces her to help him communicate with Molly and bring down the conspirators who took his life.

From the moment the opening credits are projected, "Ghost" is clearly a musical adaptation of the beloved feature film which makes great use of high-tech, cinematic elements.  These stage illusions-ghost Sam walks through doors, spirits and bodies instantly seperate into two beings-make "Ghost" a seriously supernatural experience.  Projection is used for everything from basic backdrops and scene-setting to back up for a music video-style number by Oda Mae.

In the story "Once" a guy is an Irish singer & songwriter who spends his day fixing vacuums in the Dublin shop he runs with his father, and his nights playing his music in local pubs.  He is on the verge of giving up music altogether when a Czech immigrant, "Girl", walks into the bar, hears him play and refuses to let him abandon his guitar.  As it turns out, she has a broken vacuume cleaner, Guty repairs it , and she pays him in music on a piano she plays in a record shop.  Over the course of a week, Girl convinces Guy to believe in the power of his music and his love for the woman who inspired his songs.  They scrap together money to record a demo album with a motley crew of bar friends, and their unexpected friendship and collaboration evolves into a poweful-but very complicated-love story.

The musical "Once," has the feel of a pub concert, and every effort is made to give the audience an intimate evening with the characters.  Before the show, the actors, who are also the show's musicians, play Irish standards in the Dublin pub set, and audience members are invited to join them for a drink from the onstage bar.  Since "Once" is about musicians, the show feels like a play with music, because the songs are a natural part of the storyline and there is no spontaneous bursting into song.  While the bettersweet love story between Guy & Girl is the show's central plotline, there is plenty of humor from colorful characters like Girl's Czech roommates, and Irish bank manager and surly music store owner.  The tuneful score expands on the original movie's Oscar-winning hit, "Falling Slowly."

ROCK OF AGES

"Rock Of Ages" is the tail end of the big, bad 1980s in Hollywood, and the party has been raging hard.  Aqua Net, Lycra, lace and liquor flow freely at one of the Sunset Strips last legendary venuses, a place where sex machine Stacee Jaxx takes the stage and scantily clad groupies line up to turn their fantasies into reality.  Amidst the madness, aspiring rock star (and resident toilet cleaner) Drew longs to take the stage as the next big thing (and longs for small-town girl Sherri, fresh off the bus from Kansas with stars in her eyes).  But the rock and roll fairy-tale is about to end when German developers sweep into town with plns to turn the fabled Strip into just another capitalist strip mall.  In "Rock Of Ages," can Drew, Sherri and the gang save the strip and themselves before it's too late?  Only the music of hit bands Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake and more hold the answer.

"Rock Of Ages" explores the pursuit of dreams and tells its story through hits from iconic groups and rockers of the 1980s.  "Rock Of Ages" is superflous silliness at its best.  The live band onstage and playist of karaoke-friendly classics (as well as the drinks served seat-side during the show) encourage plenty of audience participation.

PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT

Based on the popular 1994 film of the same name, "Priscilla Queen Of The Desert" follows two drag queens and a transsexual who buy a run-down old bus (nicknamed Priscilla) and set out on a road trip across the Australian Outback when one of them, Tick, is invited by his ex-wife to perform his dragshow at her far-away resort.  However, Tick is hesistant to tell his friends, Bernadette (a former performing icon who's best days are behind her) and Adam (a rambunctious young troublemaker), his own personal reasons for taking the trip.  During their journey, the trio encounters an array of Australian citizens, some of who aren't receptive to their lifestyle, while strengthening their own friendship.
"Priscilla Queen Of The Desert" features dance and disco tunes from the likes of Madonna, Cyndi Lauper and Donna Summer, Priscilla is filled with incredibly imaginative and over-the-top costumes, drag makeup and dance numbers that maintain an energetic pulse throughout the show.  In Priscilla the drag queens alternate between providing their own vocals and lipsynching to the music, which is then sung by the shows "Divas," a talented trio of beautiful and wildly costumed women.  Despite the show's campiness, (be prepared for lots of glitter and boas), Priscilla still provides a deep story about the importance of friendship and family, tolerance and acceptance, a great show for teenagers.

"MEMPHIS"

"Memphis" is set in the places where rock and roll was born in the 1950s:  the seedy nightclubs, radio stations and recording studios of the musically-rich Tennessee city.  With an original score, it tells the fictional story of DJ Huey Cahoun, a good ole' local boy with a passion for R&B music and Felicia Farrell, an up-and-coming black singer that he meets one fateful night on Beale Street.  In Memphis, despite the objections of their loved ones, Huey's close-minded mama and Felicia's cautious brother, a club owner, they embark on a dangerous affair.  As their careers rise, the relationship is challenged by personal ambition and the pressures of an outside world unable to accept their love.

"Memphis", a rollicking new musical is like a non-stop ball of energy.  From the first notes of its electrifying opening number "Underground" right up to a rousing finale called "Steal Your Rock 'n' Roll Memphis", delivers one energetic song after the next, with some of the best singing and dancing found on Broadway.  Although the story deals with serious subjects regarding race, it's never heavy-handed in the telling.  It's hard to imagine leaving "Memphis" without being lifted by its high-octane entertainment.

Simply Wicked

Wicked” is a musical based show based on the novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. It has been played in Broadway, West End, and many other theaters. It is based on L. Frank Baum’s the Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The musical debuted on October 30, 2003 on Broadway. Since then, the story has received several Tony Awards (Best Book, Best Musical, Best Orchestration, and Best Leading Actress) and six Drama Desk Awards.

The story happened prior to Dorothy’s arrival in Kansas and tells the story of the Wicked Witch of the West named Elphaba. The witches’ name was derived from L. Frank Baum’s initials. The story relates Elphaba’s relationship with the Good Witch of the North, Glinda. The plot also shows the whole story in the eyes of the villain- this is developed both in the novel and the musical.

The novel’s plot is too complicated for a musical so Stephen Schwartz collaborated with Winnie Holzman, an Emmy Award-winning writer, to condense the plot.

The musical is well-liked by audiences-“amazing”, the music is “fantastic”, in fact many of the productions are sold out, making the production among the highest-grossing shows in theaters and in tours.

Wicked is now playing at a theater near you or on Broadway!!

U2 - Catch Them Live

U2 is an Irish Band who has already won 22 Grammy Awards, which is the highest number any band has ever achieved.

The band had humble beginnings in 1976 by the then-teenagers Bono (Paul Hewson), The Edge (Dave Evans), Adam Clayton, Larry Mullen Jr., Dave’s brother Dick, Ivan McCormick, and Peter Martin.  The last three “dropped out” of the band at different timepoints for different reasons, but the band continued on.  The band started with members of limited musical proficiency but grew into superstar with the release of their album, The Joshua Tree.

By 2005, the band was already inducted into the prestigious Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and is also listed as number 22 of Rolling Stone’s 100 greatest artists of all time.  After several albums, the band sought to develop their own “tradition” and looked into American Blues, Country, and even Gospel music; these music genres soon showed in their subsequent albums.  In a few years U2 changed to a conventional rock genre and released “All That You Can’t Leave Behind” which contained singles that became worldwide hits and won Grammy Awards.
